Project is to develop an integrated carbon budget model that will be applied to the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority’s (NPCA) jurisdiction using the best available data and approaches for the landcover types present within the watershed. Using the integrated model, net carbon storage and sequestration will be estimated over a 30-year time horizon for a baseline scenario.
The final model will provide an approach for establishing baseline carbon storage and sequestration measurements as well as informing and prioritizing decisions about investments in nature-based solutions by providing the ability to quantify the potential annual carbon sequestration rates for natural land cover types and perennial crops within the Niagara Peninsula. The outcome will provide a means to qualitatively and quantitively evaluate our jurisdiction’s natural carbon sinks to further assess and mitigate the impacts of climate change and the effectiveness of nature-based climate solutions.
